date night 2

January 29th, 2009 marked what President Obama called a “wonderful day.” That’s right, women were finally granted “equal pay for equal work” under federal law! The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 was an undeniably wonderful piece of legislation that was a monumental landmark in the long-awaited advancements in women’s—and thus human—rights.

So. Heh. We both have a fair shot at fair pay, right? So, honey, since we both work at the same office and this is our third date, think you can pay for your ticket to the chick flick you’re dragging me to now?

Hey, look, men in general are truly happy to pay for your stuff, girls. And we’ll do it every time without complaint. It’s just our style, and yes, it’s a part of the culture. From the beginning of time, Man has loved Woman. Man has made love to Woman. And Man has paid for Woman the whole damn time.

But might this custom now, in the 21st century, deserve to die along with other inane aspects of chivalry (like marriage)? If fair is fair, shouldn’t we split the bill with that equal pay? Are we just trying to get out of buying another meal to be half-eaten by a date who’s too skinny and self-conscious to eat the whole piece of salmon? Or buying two tickets to a movie about a guy who’s getting with a hotter chick than our dates with an ending that’ll make her cry and us pass out in the back row? Probably.

We just hope the date night tradition finds its roots in something more concrete and doesn’t further propel an image of inequality or inferiority, economic or otherwise. Maybe women are still more discriminated in the workplace. And maybe their wallets and purses are just for decoration and are just filled with enough change to buy more shoes than a family in a small village in Africa could even know what to do with. Maybe some guys are bitter. Maybe some guys are just broke. Fine, ladies, most men will use our portion of equal pay to keep paying for our nights on the town, but don’t think that after a while it doesn’t come with a price ;-) .
